article introductori

To begin with, we are a group of three young students, Carlota Burgueño, Pau Villegas and Anna Burgos. Anna and Carlota are current students of Primary Teaching, specialised in foreign languages teaching. Pau is a French Philologist since two years ago and he is presently studying Graphic Design.
To be honest, we are not experts in science but we consider we are testimonials of the knowledge-based society as since our childhood we have been scientifically-based educated. This is so because nowadays, we are capable to overcome situations in which we need to apply the scientific method; this is problem, formulate hypothesis, test those hypothesis and contrast them with reality. As we see it, this simple process can be extended not only in scientific matters but also in everyday issues in order to solve them. Thus, if this process is really useful for us and for society in general, we believe that more knowledge related to science would involve more useful tools to carry on with our lives.
However, while we are writing down these ideas, we realise that among the members of the group there is not a solid opinion about what science exactly is and what it means for us. Some of us relate it with plants, others with medicine and others with chemistry. Helped by an encyclopaedic definition we have found that science is a “systematic study of anything that can be examined, tested, and verified. The word science is derived from the Latin word scire, meaning “to know.” From its early beginnings, science has developed into one of the greatest and most influential fields of human endeavor. Today different branches of science investigate almost everything that can be observed or detected, and science as a whole shapes the way we understand the universe, our planet, ourselves, and other living things.” So that, if science means “to know” we are happy to discover that indeed we are scientific.
We would like to share a picture with you taken form Pitzer College in California which we think represents the idea of a society based on knowledge. The picture represents human beings attached to a chain meaning that we are completely attached to our planet. The human figures are holding four big bubbles each one representing different fields of knowledge; Astronomy, Biology, Technology and Humanistic knowledge. Above those four bubbles there is another figure which might represent the Knowledge. So that, human beings need to use knowledge in order to interpret, understand and survive in the world as the only way to be free.
All in all, this is our first approach to the topic, we expect that in the events that are going to be hold in the following months, will be intended to rise the importance of a knowledge-based society to a more conscious level and we are all eager to take part in it.
